Dog Days of Summer, teaching Youth at Outdoor Expo

This weekend a hundred kids got to tell dogs to go jump in the lake as part of some environmental lessons.

Wisconsin’s official state dog is the water spaniel – a great choice for a lake laden land.

If Minnesota was to choose one, the Labrador retriever would be a good candidate.

It’s hard to keep the water loving pooches out of the H20.

The Duluth Retriever Club’s members can vouch for that.

“We’re dedicated to training dogs; hunting dogs and field trial dogs and hunt test dogs.”

The club’s labs took center stage on Saturday as part of the Izaak Walton League’s semi-annual Youth Outdoor Expo.

The expo gets kids off the couch and away from the keyboard for real world experiences.

“That’s what the Izaak Walton League is all about; getting kids outdoors and into outdoor sports.”

Walton was a 17th century English author and fisherman.
The league named after him was founded in Chicago in 1922 to preserve fish habitat.

Now, all environmental issues concern them.

This expo will teach the kids about hunting ethics and conservation by letting them handle dogs themselves in single mark water retrieves.

“The dog has to sit, be steady; it can’t leave until you instruct the dog to leave.”

Nearly a hundred kids took turns handling the dogs.

Montessori School teacher Sarah Pelto brought some of her relatives to the session.

She feels kids need lessons in and out of the classroom.

“It’s important they have a broad base of experience so they can have a good foundation for learning and growing and knowing about options in life.”

The Twin Ports chapter of the Izaak Walton League is already planning their next Youth Outdoor Expo.

It will be this spring at Hartley Nature Center and will focus on topics related to fishing.

The High Road
The High Road with outdoor icon Keith Warren can be seen on the Pursuit Channel Sundays at 8:30 pm EST, Tuesdays at 7:30 pm EST, Thursdays at 12:00 am EST, and 5:00 pm EST, and Fridays at 7:30 pm EST. This half hour outdoor television show features big game hunting from around the world.

Host Keith Warren has been pioneering big game hunting on television for more than twenty five years. His enthusiasm and passion is unequalled and his commitment to viewers and sponsors is unmatched.

“My mission is to unify sportsmen no matter how they hunt, what they hunt, or where they hunt. In order to protect the future of hunting, sportsmen must unite and realize that if we don’t, the hunter will be the next endangered species,” said Warren. “The best way to do that is by looking for a common thread that connects us all.”

Warren believes that the best available platform is through programming on the Pursuit Channel. “Pursuit Channel is connecting with the blue collar sportsmen that other networks seem to have left behind. The diehard outdoorsmen and women of our country are craving outdoor programming they can relate to,” said Warren. “Additionally, Pursuit is committed to working closely with producers to create a network that will provide producers with a place where they can grow while also providing outdoor manufacturers with measurable results that don’t break the bank.”

Upcoming episodes on The High Road include hunting elk in Canada, moose in Alaska, whitetail in Pennsylvania, and whitetail, hog, alligator, frogs and Nutria Rat in Louisiana.

Wisconsin Turkey Hunting

Wild Turkey Hunting in Wisconsin

The wild turkey is truly one of Wisconsin’s wildlife management success stories. A key role in the success of the wild turkey management program can be attributed to hunters through their purchase of the Wild Turkey Stamp which provides vital financial support in providing for future opportunities for turkey management and hunting in Wisconsin. Since wild turkeys were first successfully reintroduced into Wisconsin in 1976, population levels continue to increase and expand statewide. Successful restoration of the wild turkey resulted from tremendous hunter and landowner support, good survival, and high quality habitat.

Turkey stamp funds have been providing opportunities for turkey management in Wisconsin since 1995. Sale of the turkey stamp currently brings in over $750,000 annually for developing, managing, conserving, restoring, and maintaining the wild turkey population within the state.

Plan to attend one of the FREE Turkey Hunter Education Clinics listed below to either brush-up on your skills or to learn new techniques to help you hunt the elusive wild turkey. Typically lasting 2.5-3 hours, the clinics are designed to cover turkey biology and behavior, hunting methods, regulations, safety precautions, and landowner/hunter ethics. You can also look forward to information on in-depth hunting techniques, scoring trophy birds, and a few ideas on preparing your trophy once you get it home. Advance registration is not required.

The Wisconsin DNR is on the lookout for new instructors – if you are interested in teaching a Turkey Hunter Education Clinic in the future, please call (608) 264-8963 or email to learn more.

How do I get a spring or fall turkey permit?
To receive a turkey permit you must apply by application. Applications cost $3 and are available at any DNR Service Center, Licensing Agent, or through our Online Service Center. The application deadline for the spring hunt is December 10th. The deadline for the fall hunt is August 1st. Successful applicants will be notified via mail. After the lottery drawing occurs, remaining turkey permits will be sold over-the-counter on a first-come, first-served basis.

What do I need to participate in the turkey hunt?
To hunt wild turkey in Wisconsin, you need a valid permit (carcass tag), turkey license, and a Turkey Stamp. Permits are distributed using a preference drawing. If you receive notification via mail that you were successful in receiving a turkey permit you will need to purchase a spring/or fall turkey license and a wild turkey stamp (except Conservation Patrons and Senior Citizen Recreation Card holders). Because the ALIS system prints your turkey stamp “privilege” on your license, the actual stamp is no longer required. The actual stamp is available at DNR Service Centers for collection purposes. A carcass tag will print out at the time of the license and stamp purchase.

How do I know if I successfully drew a permit in the spring or fall turkey permit drawing?
The preference drawings for spring and fall turkey permits take place in late January and late August, respectively. Following the preference drawing, postcard notifications are sent out to permit winners and are typically received a couple weeks after the drawing is conducted. Customers who do not receive a postcard or simply would like to know their permit status sooner can check their permit application status online by using the Online Licensing Centeror by contacting a DNR Service Center, or the DNR Call Center at 1-888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463).

Are the Spring zones the same as the Fall hunting zones?
Yes, however, some zones open during the Spring season are not open during the Fall season. (Example: State Parks).

What is landowner preference?
Residents that own 50 or more contiguous acres within an open wild turkey management zone are eligible for first preference in that zone. If more than one individual is the landowner of a single parcel, only one individual may be considered a qualified landowner for the turkey drawing. A qualified landowner may assign his or her first preference status to an immediate family member, to a resident farm operator, to a family member of the operator, or to a minor for that particular zone. After this assignment, the landowner who assigned his or her eligibility may not apply for a turkey permit using landowner preference.

What state parks are open to Spring turkey hunting?
Governor Dodge (1A), Devil’s Lake (1B), Wyalusing (1C), Wildcat Mountain (1D), Mirror Lake (1E), Buckhorn (1F), Newport (2A), Interstate (4A), and Willow River (4B).

What areas are disabled Spring turkey hunting only?
Natural Bridge (1G), Nelson Dewey (1H), Belmont Mound (1J), New Glarus Woods (1K), Rocky Arbor (1L), and Loew Lake Unit-Kettle Moraine State Forest (2B).

What is the bag limit?
For the spring season it is one bearded or male turkey per tag issued. For the fall season it is one turkey of any age or sex per tag issued.

Do I need a license for assisting other hunters?
No license is required to call turkeys if you do not possess a firearm or bow. A guide license is required if you are charging a fee for your assistance.

Can I shoot a turkey for another hunter?
No.

Can I hunt turkey with the aid of dogs or bait?
Please contact Wildlife Services (Department of Agriculture) for information about abatement techniques:

  • Bait may not be used to hunt wild turkey.
  • Effective for the Fall 2010 Turkey hunting season: hunters with a valid turkey permit, stamp, and license may use dogs to hunt wild turkey throughout the state of Wisconsin

How do I register my turkey?
Bring the tagged turkey to any designated turkey registration station no later than 5 PM the day after it is harvested.

Success at the Pond Boss Convention!

Tablerock Lake

We made it home safe from the 600 mile drive to Big Cedar Lodge for the Pond Boss convention this past week. Many new friends were made as well as building and improving business relationships. These folks are all about enjoying all aspects of the great outdoors.

Allen warren was on hand to talk about the growing concern for our kids, missing out on all that the outdoors have to offer. He is spearheading a national movement to get outdoor education to be offered to our kids at school. The important traditions of spending time outdoors, learning and applying the skills of woodsmanship, hunting, climbing, mountaineering, fishing and camping, are just some of the skills that are not getting passed down to the kids.

All the information is available at www.isupportoutdoored.com for everyone to get involved. Celebrities and folks from all over the nation are getting involved to help. Please look into this first of it’s kind movement to ensure our future generstions have the oppourtunity to enjoy all nature has to offer.

Big Cedar Lodge

Brad Wiegmann was also on hand to cover the event. His unique style of writing comes from a strong love for all things fishy. Brad is a freelance outdoor writer from Sprindale, Arkansas, who adds his photography skills to his writing abilities. He also has been guiding professionally for years, adding to his experienced eye for a story when water is involved. Here is a link to his site and the story hot off press:

http://www.bradwiegmann.com/pond-fishing/pond-management/577-pond-boss-iv-conference-a-expo-2011-whats-it-all-about.html

The fishing is great on Tablerock and we were lucky enough to catch a few. The weather was pushing 80 degrees, a far cry from what we came home to. A fellow friend and crappie nut from www.crappie.com gave us some spots to fish and they were dead on. What a advantage to have friends with a common bond of the outdoors offering their help to make our trip the most enjoyable possible.

We caught a number of smaller male bass, staging for the spawn as well as a bunch of crappie to pack on ice to enjoy with friends at home. New places and friends to return to the next time we head south into the great state of Missouri. Thanks to all.

The family at Pond Boss is truly a passionate group of folks who love to be outside, usually around water. Many of the attendees came from the south where heat is a constant issue raising fish and aquatic balance. I can’t imagine dealing with water temps over 90 degrees, when we come home to a 2″ snowfall. Spend some time looking through the pond boss site and you will find topics and answers to all water related things and beyond. Countless folks are always on hand to reply to a question or concern, often with humor but always with a sincere desire to help. www.pondboss.com

“Re-made in the USA” hits market, by Todd Lipscomb

My Book Published Today!

It is hard to believe it is really here, but after so much effort, my book “Re-Made in The USA” is launching today!
Here it is: http://madeinusaforever.com/reinushowwec.html

I have to say that besides my family and founding MadeinUSAForever.com, publishing “Re-Made in The USA” is without a doubt the most important thing I have done.
De-industrialization, literally the packing up and shipping off of thousands of our factories overseas is killing our nation’s economy. I saw firsthand while living in Asia the very real threats we face, and how we — our government, companies, and ourselves as buyers took our eyes off of the big picture and opened the door to these threats.
I get the facts right, and back them up with the data. Though, the book is written to be interesting, yet real, dire, yet hopeful, passionate, yet plain speaking. Our nation is too close to the abyss to hold back.
PR for the book has already begun. I did six radio interviews last week and am aiming for 100 by July 4th. I am on the cover of a magazine for radio producers this week. One of the very neat things about this effort is how unifying it is – thankfully, I am welcomed on shows of every political background. Truly, this is not a red state or blue state issue, but a Red, White, and Blue issue. We have to roll up our sleeves and come together as a people to make things right. Just like we did in WWII, when our nation fought and defeated Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan simultaneously.
It was a great relief to work with a well respected publisher. Wiley and Sons has been around since 1807 and they live up to their motto “Knowledge for Generations”. There was no pressure me to change my tone or meaning in any way. They helped be encouraging me all the way through the process, making it a much better book.

Re-Made in The USA will be available in all Barnes & Noble’s from today. Borders is selling it also, but on a hit or miss basis store to store given their financial condition (they can order it if you do not see it), and Hudson will have it in 170 airport locations by May 1st. Any independent bookstores that do not have it in stock can get it for you in couple of days. The publisher guarantees any bookstore can sell it, or they refund 100% of the wholesale price back to the bookstore.
It is also available everywhere online including MadeinUSAForever.com. I am torn over whether to encourage purchasing it at MadeinUSAForever.com or other locations. Sales via other locations count towards the best seller list, although I can sign personal messages to copies coming from MadeinUSAForever.com’s own warehouse. Either way is fine.
Also, I understand things are tight everywhere, so feel free to check it out the library…

Pond Boss Convention Details

Building Fish structure comes from background of building/designing houses.

Fish need homes just like people do. Some can build their own fish habitat house and some hire a fish habitat builder .Here’s a little bit of background on how this idea to create artificial fish habitat has developed, as well as where we see it going in the future. Installing and creating additional fish structure has been going on for many years. We simply feel we have come up with a better way to save the fish and the environment.

Growing up in Northern Illinois, my dad started me fishing at a very young age. Although his father fished, he has never considered himself an avid fisherman. An Architect by trade, he was simply exposing his son to new things outdoors.

fisherman at sunrise building houses for fish

At age 7 Jacques’ Cousteau had my undivided attention saving the oceans and sea life, and there my passion lies, these 40+ years later.

Fast forward 20 years,  I’m president and owner of a General/Carpenter contracting business. Be your own boss they all say. Surely it would give me more time to fish right?

Housing in our area exploded, followed by steady commercial growth. We enjoyed what Dad and I agree, was some of the best 15+ years to be a builder. It was here in the trades, I worked with the materials that would come to be fishiding.com, Reclaimed Artificial fish habitat. Building houses for fish came next called artificial fish habitat.

As the recession took hold, our workload diminished. It was time to find another way to pay the bills. (and, did I mention still  fish around the world, bow hunt 90 days/season,Turke…)

Fishing boat on lake ready to build fish houses

As a builder, we had leftover vinyl material in every color, never enough for another job. Made us angry, taking up so much room in our expensive dumpsters. Then it hit me, this stuff would work great underwater and it’s keeping it out of the landfills. Algae will grow. Win-win right?

Next it was off to the professionals (and patent office), to see if it would be accepted into the industry as a safe product, and as widely used as we saw the potential. The wonderful news is the fish love it, with products now in 29 states and counting.

What started with the simplest idea and one fish crib model has turned the industry’s focus in the direction of reclaimed artificial fish habitat products, lasting for many years to come. Install fish habitat that doesn’t decay and break down, it only has to be installed once.

Trial and error, lots of siding, and more fishiding fish structure units in Wonder Lake. We continue to test and develop new textures, sizes and shapes of fish attractors for all types of needs. We film under water to see how the fish structure is being used, and what type fish habitat and size fish prefer different PVC habitat  layouts.

Hayward, Wisconsin lake with fish house builders

The biologists asked for something more dense, with fine strands to protect the smallest fry and larvae.

Something easy to transport and fit in the boat without the need of tools, weights or chains.

Products that don’t add to energy and pollution concerns.

Wide limbs to create maximum shade benefits.

These concerns have been addressed and resolved with utmost care and consideration.

This is only the beginning. This is Fishiding.

The market is vast, from saltwater to aquaculture, freshwat
